Oh, Jack

My roommate and I have this crush on 24. We watch and shriek at the TV together and it is very fun. Such an exciting show!

And yeah, I get that the show has little to no grounding in reality, that in Kieferland you can get from Echo Park to Culver City in ~4 minutes and the media airs something other than assassination coverage the day of a former president's murder, but tonight the Russian presidential motorcade got attacked in the Los Angeles downtown corridor on the alleged way to the airport. LAX is almost in freakin South Bay. I'm sorry, but a girl has standards.

It isn't even the right municipality. 24 writers, what are you thinking? Shoot at them from the 405! I mean, it's what happens in real life, right?

So charming.

Development Admit

Krzyzewskiville has its own sign on Duke's Campus. It is featured on the very first page of the viewbook. This is because Mike Krzyzewski is a Duke God. This is because Cameron is Duke's church. Attending its most important masses (the UNC/MD games) require a two-to-four week spiritual pilgrimage, during which one lives in a tent on Krzyzewskiville's lawn clutching only 40s of malt liquor for warmth.

Anyway, one enterprising (or might we say overly Crazie?) must-be-a-legacy pilgrim decided to sell his tent space on Craigslist for three grand, before getting caught in what the Chronicle, Duke's crack investigative daily, calls a "line monitor's sting."

This never would've happened under the widely beloved 2003-04 Head Line Monitor and my personal friend, Donald "Wizzle" Wine II (although if it had I'm sure his sting would've been more sophisticated than setting up a fake Hotmail account). It was a tight ship that Wizzle ran.

Go Duke!

Woody and His Viewers: Both Largely Over 70

In the spirit of Crackhouse Hazing and Watching Two Scarlett Johansson Movies in One Day, DK and I turned off The Island and finally saw Match Point.

We took it in at the Santa Monica Laemmle, which must have some kind of "About to Croak" discount: the theater was a a veritable sea of blue perms and golf caps. After a crone berated me for taking her seat ("I'm sorry, I'll move." "THAT WAS MY SEAT!" "Here, sit, I've already moved." "I PUT MY HAT THERE!" {ed. note: said hat? Did not exist} "I'm sorry, I didn't see it. I've moved." "AND MY HALF-EMPTY WATER BOTTLE THAT RESEMBLED A PIECE OF TRASH! THAT WAS MY SEAT! MY SEAT! MINE!" "You miserable hag, I am so glad I am still young and sane. Get a haircut."

I wanted to take that scene out of Annie Hall, when some dude is being boorish about Marshall McLuhan in the movie theater and Alvy magically produces Mr. McLuhan to set the bore straight, afterwards looking at the camera to say, "Boy, if only life were like this." (Very Woody).

So then I was pissed all through the previews, at both the lady for acting old and paranoid and myself for getting pissy with the elderly. Someone told me recently that old folks love their grandchildren because they're the only people happy to see them, and although that's extremely sad, it's their own goddamn fault.

I got over it and enjoyed the rest of the movie, which was quite good. So did the elderlies next to Dennis, who kept shouting at every plot point, none of which carried your traditional Woody Allen neurotic screwball humor but something else entirely, in that old-folk bullhorn "whisper," "That's so Woody!"

Bitches, rent Annie Hall.

Home Sweet Temporary Shelter

They're pouring concrete around my apartment this weekend, so I must either get out and stay out, or remain inside, at the mercy of whatever food I happen to already have in the house. If I weren't working today I may well have chosen "hole up and be antisocial with the perfect excuse," but I have instead moved into the DK Crackhouse. Dennis has a friend in town and Euge sleeps there often as well, so it really did resemble a crackhouse last night, with people in various degrees of fucked-up-edness draped on couches and mattresses around the floor, although the clean walls and lack of biohazard sharps kind of throws it.

My family left yesterday. We had a great time. Mom saw Michael Keaton drinking coffee by her hotel.

Matt insisted it wasn't him; he was too doughy and drove an Acura.

Mom saw him the next day, and went to talk to him.

"Are you Michael Keaton?"

"I am."

"I saw you here yesterday. My son doesn't believe me."

"How about I sign him an autograph?"

So now Brother Blotto has his very own message on an Amelia's Cafe napkin from Batman the First. Or Jack Frost.

Oh My

Comments. Yesterday I got this one:

Elohimus Maximus said...

Maybe you should sit around online converting people to the only true church instead of watching satan Tv all day. Agree? Disagree? Feel free to tell me what you think by commenting on my site. I invite your opinion. Just don’t be hurt if God wins the argument!

Elohimus! You're right! What was I thinking?

(The post to which he was responding was about the Olympics, btw. Figure skating = Satan these days. Something tells me the Christians are grasping at straws).

Reese Witherspoon's coming to the show today.

2.22.2006

Now That I've Given Up Travis...

The individual women's short program! Free skate so soon! Go Sasha! Go Kimmie! Less go to Emily, who is a pale Lipinski ripoff and no Michelle, despite your intact groin muscle!

No Internet. Olympics only. I even follow curling, a sport one in which one may partake while 8 months pregnant.

Haven't been blogging due to a steady visitor in-and-outflux. I have now been to Graumann's Chinese three times. It's fun and all, and worth it to spend time with my lovely friends and family, but whoever visits next, I'm sorry, you're going alone.

It's almost 1 AM.

I kind of want to watch The Cutting Edge.

Tooooe pick.

2.17.2006

Day One

First day at the exhibit. I have learned so much.

Learned how to sell a $7,000 book to a celebrity. Well, got a primer. Davide's motto: "Buy some fucking books!"

Met a former assistant of Brad Pitt's, who gave us thrilling tales of Jen's two-facedness, Brangelinic phone sex, and the Friends cast member Bitch-o-Meter. Being on the front lines of celebrity gossip is one of LA's major perks, but it's especially thrilling to hear it from someone with the facts.

Sighted:

Rene Russo
Don Cheadle
Carolyn Murphy
Kyle MacLachlan

Yes. Kyle MacLachlan. Twin Peaks. Trey MacDougal. InJustice.

Maybe leave that last one out.

2.16.2006

Employment!

Hold your hats, it's only part-time. I will be answering phones to tell people when the Ashes and Snow exhibit opens and closes, and finding someone else to answer questions about the photographs. Actually, I'm pretty stoked. The photographs are pretty:

Oh. Sorry. That's Ugly Sarah from The Bachelor: Paris.

That's better.

Plus I get a free Patagucci!

2.14.2006

The Bachelor: Paris: Adieu

Travis, it's been a good run. But I realized that when my roomate put Torino 2006* over you on the priority list and you didn't tape yet again, I didn't care.

You're just kind of boring now. No more fighting. Mooooooana's gone crazy. You're all into the bitchy sexless kindergarten teacher. I give you props for dumping Actress Susan, but I think you jumped the shark soon after your return from the Riviera.

Adieu, dear Travis. That's French for "goodbye." I know most people know that, but with you (OO AY PARIS?! OO AY MOON-MART??)-- I just can't be sure.

*It's called Turin. I know it doesn't sound as cool as "Torino" or whatever, but my aunt teaches at the university there, I've freaking been, and in English it's called TURIN. If the newscasters said it in an Italian accent I could possibly accept it, but... just come on, guys. Turin. Lock it up.

Happy Heart Day

Contrary to expectations, it's been a great Valentine's Day so far.

Received:

1. David Hasselhoff e-card.
2. Verbal commitment from parents regarding gifts and cards from family members and individual pets.
3. My friend in an underwear ad.
4. Various text messages.
5. Not one, not two, not three or four, but SIX cards and pictures from 3rd graders at Camino Nuevo.

HAPY VALENTINA MEGHAN.

I love them. I love you. Yes, you. Happy heart day.

Home Sweet Smogcloud

My roommate called over the weekend, while I was putting on my ski boots in Vail. I'd apparently forgotten to tell her I was leaving again, and she was wondering if I'd been kidnapped/murdered.

Colorado was wonderful. It was also very, very cold. T. destroyed any good feelings I had about myself as a skier, but built them up again later once I stopped sucking. Yay skiing. He also had the audacity to mention that Smeleanor might possibly have competition in the cutest baby category, but I'm sure he was just pushing my buttons.

Els was unhappy when I left for the airport. Awwwww. Be glad I didn't take my camera, people, or you'd be looking at a nice slow loading time today.

Babies In My Family

My baby cousin Smeleanor wanted to watch TV. Blue's Clues, you ask? Teletubbies?

She pointed to the TiVo and chirped it out.

"Homer Burns!"

I am so proud.

2.09.2006

Happy Day!

Barbie is back with Ken. (Did you know they broke up? Two year separation. They needed to find themselves).

They look so happy.

Things are once again right in the world.

Let's give them some privacy.

2.08.2006

How To Tide Your Over While I'm In Vail?

I know. Life is hard. Back from Tahoe yesterday, going to Vail tomorrow.

In Vail, I will see:

1. My beloved Tijuana travel partner, T.
2. The mountain.
3. My sister, her husband, their giant German sheperd, and their new house!
4. My baby cousin Smeleanor, who is the cutest child alive.
5. Smeleanor's mommy, who is the cutest adult.
6. Smeleanor's mommy's pregnant belly, carrying Smeleanor's competition.

Yessssssss!

The Bachelor: Paris, The Last Forty Minutes of the Two-Hour Episode the Fifth

Okay, my DVR didn’t record The Bachelor this past week, and Dennis’s TiVo, although it did record, cut off the first hour and twenty minutes.

So, this week, an hour and twenty minutes into The Bachelor: Paris!, live-blogged from the DK Crackhouse: Travis and Susan are thowing a football around the Duke Gardens! I used to live right behind there. She exclaims, “we make such a great team!” They drink stuff out of mugs, or maybe they’re prop mugs, whatever. I kind of hate them for despoiling my Gardens with such excruciating boringness.

Says Dennis: no comments. They have left no impression on him whatsoever. Commercials.

Susan and Travis drive along 15-501 to the Family Susan's abode. Travis has brought Mrs. Susan tulips, and they match her shirt! It must be fate. Susan’s parents are cute. Her brother, not so much. Mr. Susan brings up grandchildren. This is somewhat painful. Mrs. Susan asks what would’ve happened if Susan were just looking to meet a new guy and have fun. Susan pulls her mother into the kitchen for a chat.

Says Mrs. Susan: “You are a girl without an apartment. What are you doing? What was my advice over the summer? Discover who you are.”

DK: What’s her job again?
MB: Financial associate.
DK: So, like, a bank teller?

Mrs. Susan then sits in the living room with Travis and expresses cynicism about this whole “reality dating show” thing. Mrs. Susan might be on to something.

Travis explains in a very stilted voice, as if he were reading off cue cards, that he is not a scripted person, and that he will act on his own real feelings.

Mrs. Susan: When you say there’s no acting involved, how do you know?

Mr. Susan asks Susan whether she thinks The Bachelor will jump start her acting career. Aw. Reality TV is career suicide for actors. Look at Jerri. The Family Susan might not realize this.

Back at the hotel, Travis and Susan snuggle and make out. Travis is concerned about Mrs. Susan’s concern. I spent most of this segment trying to figure out what hotel they were staying at. I think it was the Millenium, but I can't be sure.

We realized here that we missed three of the four home visits, and everyone is now back in Paris. Oh dear. Travis did a lot of traveling that week. I bet he’s jet-lagged. How can one make such a vital and life-altering decision on

Ooh. Each of the girls has left him a personal video message to wank to before the rose ceremony!

Stoner: I feel like we have something incredible. When we first met, I felt fireworks!

Ug: WE’RE BOTH FROM NASHVILLE!!!!!!!!!

Clips reveal that he and Ug have kissed. Yuck.

Actress Susan: I’m really looking forward to falling in love with you.

Moana: (She’s crying the ENTIRE TIME). I feel complete. I want to give myself to you! Because I know you would be careful.

DK: She looks like a beeeeeeeaver!

Travis says that seeing these messages makes him realize what responsibility he has. He’s particularly worried about hurting Moana, because she’s such an emotional nutjob. Ahhhh!!! Commercials.

Chris, whose identity took a moment to register, welcomes the ladies and introduces Travis.

Susan gets a rose.

Moana looks worried. Maybe she’s thinking back to her video message. But then she gets a rose!

And it’s down to the two Sarahs! Aw. Whoever doesn’t get it is going to hear her name and feel false happiness before realizing. Which Stoner Sarah From Canada does, before Travis gives it to the Ugly.

SS hugs everyone but Moana goodbye and walks out with Travis, while the unrejected bitches TOAST with their roses.

Travis explains to Stoner that he really likes her but that they’re at different places in their life and he doesn’t want to hold her back. Stoner looks at him very tenderly and says, “So it’s just age? RIGHT?”

Stoner can’t believe he picked Moana. Aw. She feels sorry for him. She says “sorry” like a Canadian. She cries.

And she’s gone. Dennis doesn’t like the show anymore.

Next week: They will travel all over Europe for a series of romantic overnight dates! And it’s a full-blown FIGHT for the bachelor, as each lady makes the DECISION OF A LIFETIME: whether or not to join Travis as a couple for the night, in the Fantasy Suite.

2.06.2006

Get up in the mornin'/ go-in to the kitchen/ pour myself a cup of ambition!

I used K.'s face wash last week.

This was a mistake. I have a picky, bitchy Irish epidermis that is happiest in fog and failing light. Picture 1984-land: Big Brother or not, that is where my skin would flourish.

Anyway, I used K.'s (very nice, celebrity-endorsed) face wash and immediately broke out like a teenager, except that even during my adolescent ugly phase I never broke out, so it was all a new experience for me, and I can't say I recommend it.

Friday my pizzaface and I drove to San Francisco to meet up with Yaf, who had found us a cottage in Tahoe. Ever done that drive? Although LA is huge, it's distinct: cross the Ventura county line, and it's nothing but cows for five hours. One can smell the feedlots for ten minutes on either side. I got to the city and we experimented with some ways to cover my zithead.

And then off to Tahoe!

Tahoe is pretty. It also cured my pizza face, replacing it with the visage of a peeling, purple raccoon.

(Looks better/funnier in person).

Skiing with Yaf is fun, as we're on similar levels of both skill and stupidity. He understands the appeal of zipping down a nice sloping groomer really fast to feel good about oneself, but was also willing to play skier-vs.-tree and go off a badass cliff.

My first cliff. I slid wimpily down the first half and stopped, standing in fear for three minutes. Then I planted my pole, started on the first verse of Dolly Parton's "Nine to Five" (Allison Krauss cover) and flew the rest of the way down.

To celebrate we took ourselves to the Silver Legacy All-You-Can-Eat Buffet in Reno. Our table neighbor ate 47 crab legs.

I think he died.

The Bachelor: Paris, Episode the Fourth

Previously, on The Bachelor: Paris.

Thirty-three year old doctor (drink!) Travis Stork came to Paris looking for love! I forgot to mention last week how this VOs over a slow-motion shot of him with his stethoscope and little blue doctor cap. Girls arrive in Paris and squeal. Champagne. Champagne. Mooooooooooana "prevented" the other girls from getting to know Travis. Ugly Sarah pissed me off. Model Jen and Shiloh went home.

And on to the show! Here comes Chris. Chris is the alleged "host" of the show but is on camera for about three minutes per episode. I'd take that job. He tells the ladies that there will be two one-on-one dates (or, you know... dates) and one group date (otherwise known as "resembling Meghan's usual Saturday night"). Tara, for some reason, looks shocked by this. Deciding who will get each actual date are... the rejected bitches themselves, Jen and Shiloh! They enter holding hands and Shiloh, unsurprisingly, looks like shit. Moana refers to her as "Night of the Living Dead."

The bitches interview. Ugly Sarah can see herself marrying Travis. They are "the same person." Ew. Jehan points out that she is far too ancient and relic-y at 29 to have a crush on someone and must take things slow! (If she went too quickly she'd break a hip). Jen, who's 25, tells Stoner Sarah they think she's too young. She then points out to Tara that 3 of the 4 times she's been with Travis she's been drunk! Yesssss! So true. I start to like Jen a little more, but not too much because I know it won't last. Tara is like, um... whatever. Susan deflects criticism of her desire to live in LA pretty well. And then it's time for Moana.

Ahhhh! Everyone is really excited for Jen and Shiloh to smack my Moana around, forgetting that while Moana possesses both a brain and the ability to use it, Jen and Shiloh have neither.

Jiloh tell Moana she should be scared, while Moana looks back at them with an expression that could not be less terrified. They really, really don't like that Moana doesn't like to chase guys, but rather have them sensibly chase her, and that she doesn't cry all the time. They yell. Moana's like, "yeah, ok." Then Shiloh gets in her face and Moana gives her a pretty awesome smackdown. Then she loses a bunch of points by saying she didn't mean to step on anyone's toes on the yacht, that she's trying to sort out her feelings, and that she doesn't want to share them with the housebitches because they're hers. She talks reallyreally fast and cries. I don't fault anything she said, but I wish she'd said it in an interview with an evil smirk and just sat there all icy with Jiloh. I hate Jiloh. Jehan gets the date.

Later that day, Travis packs a picnic basket. He looks mighty fine packing that basket. He also looks pretty dorky carrying it around. Jehan gets a note saying "Let's experience Paris from the bottom to the top." Hm. Okay, that isn't only dirty to me, is it? Is it?

Jehan and Travis arrive in Paris. I'd been hoping for a rehash of the getting-lost-in-a-SmartCar debacle from last week, but no such luck; they climb out of a Honda Element. Which might be just as bad, come to think of it. They stroll through the markets and pick out food for dinner, while Travis VOs how totally awesome and fun it was. It's very Barefoot Contessa: Barefoot in Paris Special, in which Ina and Jeffrey have a totally staged but still very sweet picnic by the Seine. He leaves Jehan in the boulangerie to go to a jewelry shop and attack the proprietress's ears with some truly awful French, purchasing her a necklace with an Eiffel Tower pendant. I'm starting to love Travis less and less.

Travis and Jehan enjoy their "picnic" at the base of the tower. I'm sure it's cool and all, but how is this a picnic? There is no grass, no basket, and they're sitting at a table. Whatever. Jehan interviews that she's starting to "fall for this guy" but is now really anxious, because of her deep, dark secret.

Deep dark secret? Awesome! Commercials. The evil new Citibank ad that displaced mine is on. Boo.

Back at the tower, Jehan admits her deep, dark secret: she's divorced. OH MY GOD, NO! JEHAN! She explains in a very jumbled, wishy-washy way that she was duped by a green card seeker. That's probably worse than the divorce part. "Not only am I damaged goods; I'm an idiot." Travis doesn't take the news well and says something about his "fantasy" that his wife will have never been married. Dude, you're 33. On soap operas you'd be on marriage #8 by now, and it would have been #9 if you hadn't found out that Cassie is actually your half-sister at the last minute. I start to hate Travis a little, because he's really kind of a passive-aggressive dick about it and this is an issue dear to my heart. Dumb Jehan. Keep that shit to yourself. Stupid Travis. Get out of Nashville.

Jehan does not get a rose but is not sent packing; Travis asks her to wait until the rose ceremony to get cut. She returns to screaming girls at the chateau. When they discover her roselessness they all respond with "What! What! Where is it!" in succession. They all act like her previous marriage is akin to leprosy.

More commercials. Ladies, RUN, don't walk, to your nearest Sav-on and get yourself this L'Oreal Volume Shocking mascara. My roommate got some at Sundance and it is freaking amazing. The ad says 12x the volume and they are not fucking around.

Back at the chateau... the girls are going on a bike ride. Travis tells us they will be doing a "Toor Day Fraaaance" thing. My ears. Also, he will base the next rose ceremony on feelings. As opposed to... foot size? Okay. Oh, and the ladies are all in clingy athletic outifts, which T-Money appreciates. They bike along until Travis announces a race for a special surprise!

From the look of the race, Moana's the only one who understands gear shifts, and therefore wins. She interviews that she wanted it, and she got it. The others are displeased.

Back at the chateau, Ugly Sarah gets her date package. Her hair, by the way, is in rollers that triple the size of her head. She attempts to pronounce "Montmarte." She fails.

Back on the date, the group goes to a spa and frolics around the pool, giving us lots of shots of Travis with water dripping off his torso. Sweeeeeeet! Once they've dried off, Travis brings Moana downstairs for her surprise. Oh how I would have given to see an S&M chamber, but they're just getting massages. They talk to each other about their families and then camera-talk to us about their "connection" (since this episode is light on doctor references, I'm just going to say drink for the C-word). The best part is that the massage room is backed by a glass wall that looks into the pool, so producers give the other girls goggles and they keep diving down and watching. It's so pathetic and hilarious, and they keep doing it, over and over. Moana and Travis getting oiled up, holding hands, with three bug-eyed beetches floating in the backgroud.

The girls keep bitching about how Moana gets all this time with Travis, as if they would say "no, let everyone come get rubbed down!" if they'd won the race. Stoner Sarah joins in the Mean Girls shit, hopefully just because she's been separated from her bud. And the date is over.

Next date. Travis is looking for a romantic connection (drink) in "Moon-Mart" with Ugly Sarah and her gigantic Nashville poof-hair. They drive to Paris and hang out in Montmartre and I believe one guy calls Travis a piece of merde but they speak no French so of course they laugh. A street artist draws a picture of them. It looks like Ken and Barbie's Brown-Haired Friend Midge.

Back at the chateau, the girls bitch about Moana. OH MY GOD DO THEY HAVE ANYTHING ELSE TO DO. Actually, they don't have TV, so probably not. Moana hears all of it and confronts them. Before I was thinking that maybe Moana was indeed a vicious harpy and the producers weren't showing it to make the other girls look crazy, but when she asks them for specific examples of her crazy witchiness, they can only come up with "You hogged all that time with Travis!" Dear God this is terrible.

On the date, Travis and Ugly Sarah eat. Travis admits that before, he found UgSar a fake-o bag of plastic, but now she seems to be pure and true. Likely because she's never been divorced. Oh, and because she's a kindergarten teacher. He really likes that about her. BLECH. I think they're drinking beer. I bet he ordered it and she got it too to seem like they have more in common.

Anyway he gives her a rose by saying "I think you have to go home... .... .... will you take me with you?" Vomit. So next week we get to meet her vile family. They thank each other for existing. Oh my God this is boring. Does make me want to go to Paris though. Commercials.

The next day back in the country, "Travis" and certainly not a producer decides he should bike over to the chateau to hang out. The girls are all in full makeup ready to greet him, while Travis is wearing a goddamn beige bandanna over his head.

Okay I'm going to skip most of this and go straight to Moana. She's hiding out in the study writing in her journal, drinking tea. Yes, totally unstaged. Travis asks why all the girls hate her and she starts crying about how mean they are, and how she just feels so safe with Travis and it is so scary and intense! Travis has changed her life! Ahhhh! Travis looks seriously freaked the fuck out. He finishes his camera interview with "I worry about Moana." Bad sign. Commercials.

The rose ceremony! Chris tells them that Travis has MADE HIS DECISION, and therefore no cocktail party. Tara looks particularly crushed by this development. Stoner Sarah is wearing gaucho pants. Stoner Sarah gets a rose. Coincidence? Perhaps. Susan gets a rose. And finally... Moana gets a rose. Take that, bitches! Jehan looks kind of smug (I think she knew her deferement was only a polite defer), and Tara's mouth drops open in dismay. She hugs Travis goodbye and whispers to him, "Just watch out for someone that's fooling you." He can't hear her, though, so she has to repeat it. "Someone is trying to fool with your head." Honestly, I don't think he heard her that time either, and he just kind of smiles and nods.

And the end! I now no longer really like Travis! And Moana does actually seem kind of crazy but she's surrounded by batshit crazies so it makes total sense! And next week, it's back to North America for a round of hometown dates, because I always take a guy to meet my parents when we haven't even kissed.

Oh, and the clip over the credits is Travis talking at the spa about how he hates French food. He then unveils their lunch: burgers and fries. The girls actually squeal in pretend delight.
